Special Programs

Our team at Pediatric Urology Associates is proud of our special programs that allow us to better serve the children of the Carolinas with the latest and most advanced techniques available.

Advanced Laparo-endoscopic Pediatric Urology Program

Minimally invasive procedures minimize patient discomfort, negate overnight hospital stays and allow children to return to school and normal activity much quicker than traditional open surgical procedures. Drs. Molitierno and Levy have been instrumental in introducing and refining these advanced techniques in the greater Charlotte area.

  • Laparoscopic Orchidopexy using both a single stage and two stage procedure for bringing testicles located in the abdomen down into the scrotum.
  • Laparoscopic Varicocele Ligation in order to treat symptomatic or large varicoceles in adolescents.
  • Laparoscopic Retroperitoneal Nephrectomy- first in Charlotte to perform this procedure used to remove a nonfunctional kidney while staying out of the abdominal cavity.
  • Laparoscopic diagnosis and treatment of children with intersex disorders (ambiguous genitalia).
  • Endoscopic correction of vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) using Deflux- Pediatric Urology Associates was the first to perform this technique into the Charlotte area and together have performed more of these procedures than any other practice in the Carolinas. This procedure has revolutionized the treatment of VUR in children.
  • Endoscopic use of Botox in the bladders of children with neurogenic bladders to reduce bladder pressures and provide an alternative to open bladder augmentation in some children.

Myelomeningocele/ Neurogenic Bladder Program

Children with spina bifida are at a high risk for the development of neurogenic bladders due to the abnormalities associated with the spinal cord defects that define this disorder. Children with spina bifida were as a rule incontinent and many did not live to adulthood prior to the advent of special surgical techniques and careful monitoring of the kidneys. Our team at pediatric urology associates are experts in the care of children with spina bifida from birth until adolescence.

  • prenatal consultation
  • initial evaluation in NICU after birth
  • monitoring of kidneys and bladder in our office using portable ultrasound
  • Video Urodynamics testing at Carolinas Institute of Rehab
  • Conservative management of urinary continence using medications and often intermittent catheterization.
  • If conservative management fails then we have vast experience with bladder reconstruction, urethral slings and catheterizable channels utilizing the appendix.
